Very little New Zealand or Māori art to see. We arrived from Australia unexpectedly and the gallery only really had an Australian Aboriginal art exhibition on display, very disappointing.

Terrific art gallery. Building is architecturally outstanding, with best NZ art works and some good international works. Not to be missed.

There are many old works of art from the 16th century, 19th century, etc.
Admission is free, so just go in and turn right. I think I spent an hour leisurely watching. There seems to be a luggage storage service as well.

Very nice art museum, showcasing both “traditional” art works from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as more modern works from Mauri and indigenous peoples of Australia. It also has a children’s area on weekends and school holidays where the kids can create art and play with different mediums. Also, entry is free to everyone.

This is a great museum where you can enjoy art for free.
You can leave your luggage for free, which is a good thing.
Also, the exhibits and presentation methods were different from those in Japan, so I learned a lot.
It seems to be supported by donations.

My recent visit to this art gallery with my mum, who is a New Zealand international visitor, and myself, a New Zealand citizen, left us with mixed feelings. While the artwork was undeniably impressive, our overall experience was overshadowed by the staff's behavior. Upon our arrival, a security officer promptly approached us to inform us of a 'no food' policy. My mum had only taken a Kurols lozenge, clearly not a food item. Despite my explanation, another staff member joined the encounter about closing hours, and it felt like they were excessively enforcing the rules and picking on us.

It would have been much more welcoming to have staff greet visitors and establish a friendlier atmosphere. While rules are important, it's equally vital to communicate them politely and respectfully, especially to international visitors. Given that we were the only patrons in the gallery at the time, there seemed to be no urgency to enforce these rules in such a confrontational manner. This experience left me feeling slightly embarrassed for the staff.

I'd like to suggest that the staff be educated about the balance between rule enforcement and visitor experience. Excessive rule notes or interventions can sometimes disrupt the enjoyment of the art. It's crucial to strike a balance, ensuring both art's safety and a welcoming environment for patrons.

I visit the gallery about 6 times a year and am always impressed by the quality of the exhibitions. If an Aucklander I highly recommended getting a membership, to which you can add an extra person for a small amount. Often some workshops on for the kids (and adults).

Very nice art gallery. I went there last weekend and saw a lovely show with contemporary and historical paintings and sculpture from Maori and European artists. I particularly liked the cubist still lifes which included Saskia Leek's painting. They are like little gemstones with their glowing colours and hard edges, looking through special glasses

An interesting small gallery. Tends to exhibit a majority of contemporary art also with New Zealand art over time predominating, as one would expect.

I was shocked, could not look, tears - almost - pursuing my eyes, I felt the scene. They had the opposite, I made it back OK. School kids resuscitate me.

Came here with my granddaughter. Not for us, we left after 30 minutes. Not a lot of activities here for kids. Seems like most of the interesting exhibits go to Te Papa in Wellington rather than here.

Amazing art gallery, the oil paintings are incredible to look at.there was a ridiculously loud school trip on at the time but they all went back downstairs after a bit.

As a descendant of the indigenous people of Aotearoa NZ, Ngā Iwi Māori, I am in awe of the current exhibition Toi Tu Toi Ora and it's critical reflection on post-colonial dynamics. The Auckland Art Galleries staff members also demonstrated professionalism and bicultural commitment by using Te Reo Māori to the best of their ability.

Parking at Wilsons parking opposite is expensive and parking exit is on the opposite side to the gallery so expect to walk - they could have negotiated a cheap galllery parking with Auckland Transport parking further down maybe. The gallery is over-staffed with about 4 workers at reception which is free and with "ask me" attendants sitting on their phones bored with nothing to do. There are empty rooms with two sculptures and some arty netting drapes. The artwork itself now has gone all indigenously politically correct with pieces that look like a junior school crafts class has made it, so if that is your thing you'll love it - but I was hoping for actual art by artists with some artistic skill. The centre itself is nice and I believe the cafe is nice but unsure of how prices compare.

I always enjoy checking out the Auckland art gallery! I think it is a criminally underrated place to visit, especially on a staycation. Meeting up with friends to go shopping on queen street can get repetitive (and expensive). So visiting the art gallery is a great alternative. There is no entry fee and the exhibits change enough that I never get bored. It’s a great way to spend your afternoon instead of window-shopping.

I visited the art gallery after meeting up with some friends and grabbing a coffee. It wasn’t busy at all and we were able to peruse the artworks at our own leisure.

The art is not only visually stunning, but the majority of pieces have strong themes and narratives related to important historical and current events. I constantly find myself learning something new about Maori history and culture whenever I visit. However, even without the art, the architecture of the building itself is stunning.

The staff are lovely and extremely informative. Chatting with the staff at the front desk gave me some insight to the upcoming exhibitions, which I’d love to see. Upcoming exhibitions and instalments are also listed on the website, so you can check online to see whats going on before visiting.

Lovely place to visit for school holidays. Had a scavenger hunt which was enjoyable and free! Beautiful art pieces as well. Very kind staff.

Small, notice the exhibitions aren't changed very frequently. What about all the famous NZ paintings which must be kept under lock and key? Couldn't a permanent exhibition be kept in one of the rooms, with the NZ oils, acrylics etc paintings being turned over regularly.

Dropped into The Walters Prize and found my yin the gallery for hours, due in the main to the fascinating historical Exhibitions. A must see

This must be the most boring art gallery ever, There's nothing to see here not since it was built.
I don't understand why you guys don't try to bring bigger international artist to Auckland. At least in Wellington Museum there's Van Goh, Surrealist Art, Chiharu Shiota: The web of time etc and they are a museum not an art gallery.
Even the Terracota Army came to Te papa!
I mean come on.this must be the saddest art gallery ever.
I guess I can't blame you guys. I mean with the amount of road works, traffic issues and less parking its a battle to drive through CBD to find a park.
We can only blame Auckland Transport for half of the problem.
