Auckland Head & Neck Specialists - Drs Mark Izzard, Rajan Patel, Kevin Smith and Muammar Abu-Serriah

Unfortunately, recently I was diagnosed with a tumour on my Parotid Gland.
Sincere thanks to Dr Wessel Oosthuizen {Pauanui Doctor) for identifying a problem.
Fortunately, I was referred to the Mercy Hospital Head and Neck Specialist Team and Rajan Patel (Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgeon and his Team.
What a slick and efficient service they provided. My first 45 minute appointment was for an Ultra Sound, followed by a biopsy, followed by an analysis of the Biopsy by a Doctor and a Pathologist, and subsequently followed by a meeting with the Surgeon Rajan Patel and a discussion on the requirements for the surgery and hazards of the Procedure and Confirmation of the Surgery Date.
Within thirty minutes after the consultation with Rajan Patel, the Patient care Manager was communicating with me by phone regarding the paper-work required for surgery and enquiring if I needed any further assistance or clarification.
The surgery was performed and a night's recovery in the ward went well. The only interruption was being woken for Vital Sign Monitoring.
The food was excellent.
I was discharged with a drain in my neck and clear instructions on how to manage and monitor with contact numbers.
My return to have the drain removed was very efficient with an instruction to text when I arrived in the waiting room to the Nurse who was to remove the drain. The whole procedure was 10-15 minutes.
The system was repeated on the stitches removal.
I do not know how Rajan Patel and his team could be more efficient. From diagnostic to surgery, to care, to follow-up, was unpretentious, caring, and highly efficient. There is no time wasted in any region of this procedure, of mine or theirs.
My sincere thanks to everyone involved. I believe it was 30-40 people, and in particular to Rajan Pated. Keep moving forward.

I was well looked after & the facial & neck surgery I received left no visible signs and solved the problem. I have never had the removal of 50-60 stitches accompanied by humming & singing before! He obviously enjoys his work & I am grateful to him.

We talk about bedside manner and whether a patient has trust and confidence in the person who is about to operate on them. For myself I would have to feel one hundred percent confident and this is how I felt with Kevin Smith. I had the good fortune to be referred to Dr Muammar Abu-Serriah for an issue with my jaw. He was an absolute delight to engage with. Great communication throughout the journey, very clear on what was needed and why, and set expectations regarding post-surgical recovery. My right TMJ arthroplasty surgery went very well and due to his superb stitching skills, I now have barely noticeable scars. Thank you so much for your care, kindness, patience and excellent surgical skills, all of which made for a great experience and a good patient outcome.

A great team who act quickly with excellent results, bed side manner and aftercare. Would absolutely return to their care if I ever required it again.

Dr Muammar Abu-Serriah completed a complex sialendoscopy for me. I am a chronically unwell and unfortunately rather complicated autoimmune patient. As well as his professional and warm manner and his skilled and experienced surgical abilities resulting in a successful surgery, I was most impressed with his attitude towards my situation. Muammar respected the knowledge and experience I have of my personal specific medical complexities. He listened to these, collaborating with me to make sure my surgical plan (extended hospital stay together with longer IV antibiotic treatment after surgery) was completed successfully. For chronically unwell patients this really matters! Thank you Dr Muammar for your professional and empathic approach.

The team at Auckland Head & Neck Specialists were great to deal with. Dr Muammar Abu-Serriah is the loveliest person, he was so pleasant and explained everything to us step by step. He was very accommodating and our daughter’s surgery went very smoothly.

TMJ care is seen as a mystery but need not be with the right expertise. Dr Abu-Serriah is a world class surgeon who happens to live in Aotearoa and is skilled in this area. I had seen two previous oral maxillofacial surgeons, one who dismissed me and said to ‘relax’ and the other performing a discectomy (unfortunately that failed).
Dr Muammar completed a revision of the discectomy and placed a fat graft in the joint as well as an arthroscopy of the other joint. My mouth opening prior to surgery was 18mm and now it’s 43mm. A huge difference. I am very grateful to him (as he has positively changed my life) and I recommend anyone with TMJ type issues should see Dr Muammar first for quality and expert advice. The team in surgery were amazing. I won’t lie, the initial recovery was brutal but worth it! I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Nga mihi nui!

This post is from Faye Brea whom had an apt with Auckland Head and Neck Specialists and from the initial contact with Adrienne at booking and Care Manager, to, Reception, Ultrasound, Radiologist, Pathologist Dr Al-Sakini and the surgeon Dr Kevin Smith I could not fault the complete faith in all connected with my visit and also the attention and the manner in which I was treated. I could only say exceptional and could not more highly recommend.

I feel extremely lucky to be referred to Dr Kim Gear. She is one of most caring doctors I have experienced. She has a whole holistic approach, and discovered I have a condition actually in my stomach (she is an Oral physician). She is so thorough. Referred me onto another specialist. I was blown away a few days ago, by her personally emailing me to see how I was going!

Last year my 17 year old son underwent a mandibulectomy and reconstruction with fibular flap surgery with Muammar Abu-Serriah, he is currently still in his care as we have a few more surgeries. Muammar has been amazing not only with us as parents but my son also, he has made us feel at ease about every procedure and been caring and approachable. He is extremely knowledgeable and quick to act, we have really appreciated everything he has done for Zach.

I recently had jaw surgery with Dr Muammar Abu-Serriah and it has been a really smooth experience. It was a major surgery but I felt safe and in the best hands with Muammar. Muammar and the team at Auckland Head and Neck Specialists have been nothing short of amazing to deal with. I had a very complicated surgery on a tumor in my jaw and Muammar carried out a very long and difficult procedure leaving me without any visible scars. You would never know to look at me that he removed replaced a significant part of my jaw bone. Despite his incredible skill he has always been friendly, humble and very approachable. You will be in very safe hands with him and his team.

I was recently diagnosed with Oral (Tongue) cancer, and was referred to see Dr. Muammar. He provided me with detailed and helpful information on my condition and the plan of treatment during the initial consultation. The information provided was very helpful for me to prepare myself for what was to come.

The operation was an extensive one, but Dr Muammar and his team were extremely skilful that resulted in excellent results.

My 18 year old daughter recently underwent double jaw correction surgery in November, with Muammar.
As a registered nurse with many years of theatre experience, I have been so very impressed with Muammar, from the moment we met with him over 2 years ago. He was able to explain the options and steps required, which gave us a plan to work towards. He has been professional, personable, and so very caring of my daughter. His surgical ability is clearly outstanding and so very meticulous. He is extremely patient focused, wanting only the best result for my daughter, which extended into supporting us with advice on some tough days post surgery.
I felt at ease knowing he was in charge of my daughter's care, as he also surrounds himself with a great anaesthetic, theatre and clinic team.
His communication with our Orthodontist has been amazing, and we agree with her.we are very lucky to have someone of his skill in NZ.

I have never had so much attention in a medical facility, where at one time there were 5 medical professionals in the room assessing and diagnosing my situation. Everyone from the receptionist to the surgeon Ragan Patel exceeded my expectations in the way they worked, communicated and the efficiency of the consultation. They deserve 6 stars!

I recently had surgery on my jaw which is never a fun experience. However, Dr Muammar and his team made the whole process amazing, fitting me in as soon as they could and the recovery time was much shorter than expected due to some excellent work. I would highly recommend him and his team for any medical issues.
