Howick Historical Village reviews
55Amazing historical experience showing how the settlement of Auckland by the British took place. It's humbling to see the modest cottages (and cramped ships) of these early soldiers who were tasked with the defence of what was then New Zealand's capital. Great care had been taken to dismantle these dwellings and re-assemble them in the Historical Village premises. The staff are nice and friendly, and the Homestead Cafe has meals and refreshments for visitors. The $15 ticket is well worth the price.
Attended the Live Summer Picnic with 3 grandchildren aged 5,3, and 8 months. They absolutely loved the school lesson, blacksmith, bee talk, candle making, toys, and butter making. It was so interactive that we ended up being there for 5 hours! There was plenty of shade for our picnic on the lawn. There was a lovely Cafe on site. Toilet facilities were at a few points in the village. There was a Gelato stand, an old fashioned sweet store and a gift shop. It all provided a fabulous day out.
I went approximately 7 years ago and it was amazing. I'm not sure if it's better in the school holidays but I felt like it was a let down this time. I'm sure there were more buildings open to the public previously? And there were people acting in character and engaging the children in activities - card making, diy bubbles and diy butter etc. I believe you could look in the mud house previously
Visited on the open Live Day. Great activities for kids and grown ups. Learned to do butter and kept the kids entertained with that. Different areas to focus on and visit. Not very crowded and just as you exist there is a playground on the left
Historic journey of NZ, feel good when you era more than 100 years behind, good place to visit as family and nice place for children to get some historic exp.
This is a fantastic little peace of East Aucklands history, it's a treasure. Even comes complete with a haunted house.or so they say.
Absolutely loved the experience Great for all Ages. There is a Pond so do be mindful when visiting with Toddlers and Smaller Children
A truly remarkable piece of history!
Howick Village settlement began in 1847 when retired soldiers from England came to help defend Auckland.
A great deal of history attached to this village, it is a 'must visit' place.
We are from England and have been here three times and enjoyed every minute of it.
Thoroughly recommended and check out the history too!
What an amazing little treasure.absolutely loved the visit and walk through of the village.the facility is very well maintained
We came for the live village day, and it was great. The school was an amazing experience. Lots of games for kids
Great how they have traced the early soldiers and linked their houses and families. Adds a personal dimension to the houses
Lovely historic village especially on an open/live day with games and live demonstrations. Very friendly staff. Love the herb plants and fruit trees.
Went here on a school trip. Quite a cool place for the kids to check out. Kids had fun learning about different things and making butter. I will say though one of the lady's teaching there was pretty grumpy with the kids, It felt like she had, had enough of working there and was very much over it. But other then that everyone else was lovely and we enjoyed exploring the place.
Well preserved historical village. A joy to casually stroll through and learn about a bit of Auckland’s history.
Great day out. For all ages. Interactive things to do for children.
Will definitely visit again
This was second time visiting this village with family. Love those activities: butter making, school time, wash day….
The preserved village is amazing. A great place to visit if you are into history. And of course.it is a MUST to see the garlic farmer's house if you are a VLDL fan! Huge thanks to Francesca. She is such a lovely helper! Thank you for the visit.
Really well presented history of early european settlement in nz. It really is interesting & very pretty surroundings too. Lovely staff at the entry.
The Cafe made a great coffee. Meals were basic but edible. The " beer battered fish & chips" was dried out freezer surprise, which was disappointing. Lovely setting.
This idyllic village provided a very peaceful location in the bustling city for a cup of coffee and a muffin
Went on a school trip with my 8year old recently, and it was great!
The other 8/9 year olds seemed to enjoy it as well.
From butter making, to playing with toys of old, it was educational and interesting to have a peek into the past.
The staff were very nice.
Recommend!
