Historic Cape Egmont Lighthouse & Museum reviews
85 Took a day trip to the Cape Egmont lighthouse. You need to park a little down the road as it stands in someone's property.
The last lighthouse keepers daughter has opened a little tuckshop, as they bought the house next to the lighthouse. You can get good coffee and ice cream.
The lady was extremely friendly and was open to having a conversation with us and made us feel very welcome.
I was blessed with a fine afternoon, which helped make wonderful photos with Mt Taranaki in the back ground covered in snow. It is well worth making the drive out here on a clear day (in my case I was passing though on a road trip, so only had this one opportunity to visit). When visiting continue down to the end of the road by the beach as well, as you can get the photos back over the farm land with the mountain in the back ground. Note that the path to the lighthouse is through a private property at the beginning, but it is currently clearly marked.
It's inspiring to climb the small rise above the road and stand at the base of this old lighthouse. The service this station has given! The men who used to climb the internal stairway each day to maintain the light and clean the glass gave guidance and assurance to so many of their fellows tossing off this remorseless coast with its shallow beaches and mile after mile of ominous cliffs. It's sobering to stand at the now-shuttered red door entrance and consider these things.
Apart from the amazing view and heritage at the lighthouse, you have to try the coffee from the little shop at the entrance, which has the most welcoming and friendly owner and keeper.
Amazing, the size, the history, it has "presence'. Walkway not well marked, but worth the wee walk/climb.
Lovely lighthouse, with views of Taranaki on a clear day. You can't go in it. Clearly the neighbors are not happy with tourists parking around their driveway because there are ropes and signs everywhere. We parked on the other side of the road and it was fine. Also, there is a chain over the entrance but you can still walk up to the lighthouse, it's just to stop cars.
You can go up to the lighthouse (wich looks really cool) but that's it, wouldn't recommend it if it's not on your way.
Smart looking lighthouse but not much more to see except the view.
Need to park at the end of the road, walk back up and then through private property to access it.
Worth a visit. No sign posts, so deceiving off the main road, and we were unsure where access was, after going over a chain and cattle stop, we made it easy few steps up the hill. Very stunning even on a rainy day
Another lighthouse off our to do list. We had the time so visited this lighthouse. Was only about 5 km down Cape Road from the main highway.
Try and visit on a fine day so you can enjoy the views of the ocean. Only 30 steps up to the light house.
About 80 meters from the end of the road is an entrance with a chain and signage denoting the walking entrance.
This is a lovely landmark of the Naki thats worth a visit.
Nothing spectacular if you're looking for an oomph factor.
The views from the lighthouse and the lighthouse itself are nice.
Could certainly use some maintenance around.
The surrounding grounds are private, so.please remember to be respectful:)
Great location to stop by, you while can have the mountain as the backdrop and lighthouse in front if whether is good.
No signage to lighthouse so need to use GPS. It’s looks private (it’s not) but just step over the chain and through the gate and up some steep stairs. It’s lovely once you get there and worth the detour. Pity about no parking signs and roped off areas which isn’t very encouraging for visitors.
Came here at the end of June. Had a lovely time enjoying the beautiful scenery. Worth a trip for sure if you are in Taranaki!
Lovely little replica lighthouse housing the original Cape Egmont lighthouse light/lighting system. Open Sat - Sun 11am - 3pm by friendly volunteers. You can go inside for a small donation to help with maintenance
It was a awesome day it was a shame that we got there late.the Museum was closed maybe next time.
Couldn't work out how to go up close, turns out you have to go through the chain gate on foot and walk past the house.
Beautiful place of course and great to see on the road trip
It's not worth visiting given the distant from the city to get there. It's the lighthouse built in 1886 with few steps to get to its base which is 30m above the sea level. Nothing much of an experience rather than that
A rustic place and worth only to say "I have been thre". We knew it was not a main attraction. But wanted to see the mountain from that side also and was treated to a beautiful view and clear sky
Not much to see but worth the trip to see the lighthouse and share a yarn with the friendly locals collecting a feed from the sea. Nice views of the mountain.
