Capitol Restaurant reviews
70 Had a fabulous meal catching up with family from out of town. Food was superb - every dish was top quality,
beautifully presented and best of all, tasted sublime. You always know when you've picked a great restaurant when you struggle to make choices from the menu. Highlights for us were the entrees of calamari with aoli, sautéed lambs brains and steak tartare. Mains were divine- Wagu steak with pamesan potato gratin, Nduja strozzapetti and lambs liver with spinach sautéed with gorgonzola. Portions were perfect, possibly even too large but there wasn't a heck of a lot left after the three of us eagerly shared a taste of our chosen dishes with each other. There was definitely some food envy going on. We couldn't resist the Pavlova served with blackcurrant coulis which was dessert heaven only to then be gifted one of Capitols delicious chocolate puddings with creme fraiche. Full and replete our night was over. Throughout the evening we were beautifully looked after by Toby who was extremely knowledgeable about the daily blackboard specials and was generous with his time without being intrusive.
Overall a fantastic night that restored my faith in Bistro style dining in Wellinton.
What an amazing night.
Amazing food, amazing drinks, amazing staff and amazing atmosphere.
Couldn't ask for a better experience!
What a fantastic place.
Had a good night, but they failed to mention that they had booked our table at a certain time, so they basically gave us 5 minutes warning at the end of our meal.
Disappointing!
Great food! Best food I had in New Zealand … I am in day 8 and I have booked very nice reputable places, but this one… oh my god! Amazing! Great service as well which is hard to find in NZ.
Good job people!:)
We were looking for a place to have an easy stress free European dinner after a long day. The dishes were fantastic, Eye fillet was perfectly cooked with a fantastic gratin and beautiful pesto. Side potatoes were more on a rusty side with roasted to a point of fluffiness inside and crunchy skin on the outside. I also tried my friend's special of the day veal in the bone which was extremely tender and melt in the mouth.
The reason I gave 4 stars us that the restaurant was too busy and they really need to have at least 1 more staff. I ordered cranberry juice but got something else, possibly grapefruit as it was pink but citrusy. We were told that someone would tell us the specials, but no-one came to do so and we had to remind the waitress to do so when she was taking the order. We arrived at the restaurant at 8.30 pretty hungry and only got the food at 9.55, which was a very long wait especially for a late sitting. I understand of course that they were super busy, but I believe the management needs to make sure that there is enough stuff available for those nights.
As always an amazing dinner with great company. The service, food, wine and atmosphere were all outstanding. I went to the opening of this restaurant some 20 years ago and it is still at the top of its game.
Service was a bit patchy and my steak, which was supposed to be medium-rare arrived well done. My partner's risotto was glutinous and cold. Great location and atmosphere but the rest of it didn't quite impress.
It’s been a few years between meals for us but the quality and professionalism is still evident. My kingfish special was melt in the mouth stunning and the service exemplary
One of our faves in Welly. We took our friends son out for a special treat it was a great night. Staff really care about food, they’re so friendly and knowledgeable. Had bluff oysters with the house hot sauce, an amazing tartare beef, and the negroni is always spot on.
Excellent service and delicious food for both pescatarians and vegetarians (starters, mains and a dessert). Very nice atmosphere too; tranquil but fancy enough to make your meal out feel special.
Wow wow! Absolutely delicious food! We had a perfect dinner for our anniversary. Thank you
I enjoyed the food, a bit pricey for me. It's not the usual place I would go to, but the place seem to be enjoyed by the mature crowd. The wait staff were amazing, memorised all the things on the menu and presented the specials very well.
Wellington's best. We dined here for a group birthday this week and even though it was super busy in the week leading up to xmas, the food, team, and evening was delightful. Standout dishes were the wagyu steak (on special at the moment), and the twice cooked lamb, and toffee pudding. We'll return again & again.
Incredible staff, knowledgeable with attention to detail. Perfectly seasoned fish of the day. A delightful dining experience.
We enjoyed a memorable meal. Staff service was great, the food was excellent. Definitely up a level.
Eines unserer besten Essen in Neuseeland genossen. Sehr freundliches Personal. Tolle Weinkarte. Fleisch und Fisch waren perfekt. Zum Schluss Blauschimmelkäse mit Süsswein war einfach perfekt
A rainy Wednesday night in Wellington. We are from Australia and had been looking for somewhere decent to have dinner, when we finally stumbled upon Capital…. And we were not disappointed.
Great food, good service and very nice atmosphere.
I had pork schnitzel, my wife had lamb. Both perfect with sides of spinach and potatoes.
Thanks Capital. Excellent!
Highly recommended
We went there for dinner, ordered our food, but didn't receive it until 11/2 hours later, which made for a late night, the restaurant was full, but apparently not enough staff were available this night. We were not too pleased with the long delay.
Always a nice dinner with great service. We tried the WOAP cocktail, festival dish and burger. We also shared the calamari which was the best thing we had. Their calamari is so light and soft with wonderful flavor. I don't known what magic they are weaving with their calamari, but it's definitely worth going there to have it. The festival dish was not amazing and has a very strong fishy seafood flavor. The burger was nice, but nothing special.
Food is always good there. Impeccable service and tasty menu and always evolving. It's a regular place for us and it has always been consistent for service, food and drinks. Great restaurant for any occasion. The beef fillet is my favourite paired with the spinach sautées side, and the toffee pudding is to die for with a glass of sherry.
