The Grill at Solway Park

Booked for New Years Eve wanting to have a lovely meal and drinks as we have been a few times before.
Only to find the menu was the "all day menu". So pizzas or fish and chips mains basically! There was a steak - but it had to be cooked only one way - why we have no idea so why put it on?
There were as many staff as customers so that didn't surprise us.
We ordered a few entrees to see how they wld go. They were all tasteless and the dumplings were just awful. No filling and thick chewy stodgy casings. We cldnt even eat them!
The staff were lovely - our waitress was really good. We had to swap chairs when we first arrived as one had a broken back and the other only one side in the seat!
It wld have been good if we were advised when we booked that it wldnt be the normal night menu!
The place itself is amazing and shld be buzzing!
This is not any staff error- just plain bad management! It needs a complete change and this place just might go back to what it was a few years back!
We'll never get the Homestead or the great restaurant that was in there back - but please do something to save this Solway Park restaurant and get it back to what it was!

I came here on the off chance that it had improved after a year, I was sorely mistaken.we decided to order 3 courses right from the start including cocktails and a bottle of their pricier Pinot noir, only to have our entrees arrive before our drinks (if we wanted fast food we would gone to a drivethrough like McDonald's), so not even time enough to have our cocktails, before we got time to enjoy our lovely wine with our meals. And then to make matters worse the kitchen decided to send our mains when we hadn't even finished entrees.when they arrived I said to the the waitress we weren't ready (anyone could tell, our table hadn't been cleared at this stage) to which she took them back to the kitchen and instead of discarding them they let them sit underneath heat lamps letting fish go dry, salad wilting and mash turning stone cold all of which the kitchen thought was fine to re-serve.and it was a slow Saturday evening.no questions as to why, not a place I'd revisit or recommend.in reality -1star out of five

Food was disgusting no flavour at all. Portion size was very small had to go get dinner else where after as everyone was still hungry will definitely not go back here.

Went today for lunch, we were very disappointed in the meal and service. Some dishes were cold, plates were not cleared after each course. Drink bottles not cleared either. Staff did not clear anything off table and we were not offered dessert. And there was only one other couple eating, so not busy. We were looking forward to a lovely meal out but was not the case.

Definitely wouldn't go back to this restaurant. You would expect to get a decent meal after spending approximately $50-$60 per person but that is not the case with this place. Spent a total of $300 on meals but we had to order pizzas from the town after eating this tasteless and super small sized meals at this place.

We ordered 2 kids pizzas which came half frozen which we had to return for replacement. Fish meal was bland and flavourless, stake was very chewie along with other dishes that were completely tasteless. If we checked previous reviews about this restaurant, we wouldn't have visited this place.

Alot of people have put same reviews as us during past 1 year, I wonder if the restaurant management is actually putting any effort to change experience / food here considering large number of bad reviews.

Restaurant staff provided really good service which becomes pointless if you cannot provide good food at the restaurant.

Would not going there again. Waited for ages just to get a drink. Then the meal took a hour. Over cooked Steaks. The Lamb dish was so small. Not a great place to eat For what you pay.

Had some fries and a couple of beers. Nice atmosphere, able to talk without yelling. Great service.

Certainly not a place I would recommend eating. We had such a mixed bag it's hard to explain, kids ordered spaghetti Bolognese and 1 dish was literally half in propotion to the other with neither kid finishing their meal. For the adults I had lamb that they tried preparing as a gourmet meal, the portion was ridiculously small and had no flavor, partner had eggplant cannelloni that was 5 thin slices of eggplant wrapped around mushroom sauce, it was barely enough for a starter. Just terrible based on the price. Others had fish and chips, servings were MASSIVE but again for was not a great flavor. They're not sure if they are going for a gourmet experience or a gluttonous one, in either case they fail on flavour. My picture is of my cheese cake dessert, it literally was like someone had scooped a spoon size portion, poor taste, poor size, poor price. $300 bill where we felt robbed. Spend your money elsewhere, presentation does not make a meal.

Short staffed! No service and got entree same time as main! Others didn't even receive their orders. Not a good experience.

I would like to get your place up to a good STANDARD.

My husband enjoyed his steak meal and my gnocchi was very tasty although rather large. The service however was terrible. Our wine took awhile to come to the table and the waitress just put it on the table without opening it or offering to pour it. When we had finished our meals and our plates were taken (mine only half eaten) the waitress did not ask how our meals were and did not ask whether we wanted any dessert or any more wine? When we went to pay the only thing we were asked is how we were paying. Also the chairs were very old and uncomfortable. Would not go back.

Steak was beautifully cooked. Came with creamy mash, garlic butter and fresh veggies. Absolutely yum! Well done Chef! Friend had the Salmon which also received raving reviews.

Never been before. Had a lovely meal. No complaints what so ever service was abit on the slow side but suited us as we were not in a rush

We will definitely NOT be going back to this restaurant. The meals were average and don’t get me started on the service! Or lack there of. It was absolutely below standard (and that’s being generous) … AND the waiter started to laugh when we complained… until he realised it wasn’t a laughing matter. Our drinks got completely mixed up and the wait on our drinks was 20 minutes after we ordered them. I had to go up to the bar MYSELF and get them because they sat there for a decent 10 minutes. Will not be going back there at all. Wouldn’t waste my time again. Poor service and poor quality of food! They were more than happy to take my money but did not deserve it for the horrible experience we received. Do NOT recommend. We’ve been to The Grill many times before and this is by far the worst. Do Better! Train your staff better.

A restaurant within a hotel so wasn't expecting more than we got.

High Tea at The Grill was very good. Plenty of variety savouries, sandwiches, scones and sweet treats. We had the bubbles as well. Tea was a little cold and weak but the rest was good. Shame there was only us there as it is certainly something different for a change

Almost $12 for a glass of beer. Looks like the bar has been taken over or contracted to Indians and have no idea about running a bar, shocking prices. Nice cosy seating arrangements been changed to hard chairs, no class, no idea, absolutely shameful

Service was great, but unfortunately that’s where it ends.
The seafood chowder was lukewarm and the amount we received, for the price we paid, was disappointing.
The Fish and chips were really greasy (so much oil on the plate), the coleslaw inedible and over half the plate was fries.
Gave feed back at the time and the chowder was replaced.
But seriously, for the price we paid, you can have a far better and worth while experience elsewhere…. Trust me. I’m currently visiting my home town from over seas and have had some incredible eating experiences in the Wairarapa since arriving. Gutted about this one though, as this was a Xmas gift to my elderly parents and in-laws. We won’t be back.

Meal was poor, first dish was a pork belly something and tasted like shoe leather. 2nd was sirloin and was ordered medium, came out as a burnt brick. Dessert was the cheesecake and it was lovely. I would not recommend to anyone.

Although appreciated that we were seated without a reservation it doesn't make up for the lack of service, poor attention and general bad hosting. I did have an excellent steak cooked to perfection but the rest of my meal was sub standard, some of it missing and never got the chance to have it corrected as once served we were forgotten (menus left on the table, steak knife would have helped plus my aoli was not aoli, kids left wondering where there desert was). It was disappointing, the cost of a meal isn't cheap so you have expectations, tonight's team let them down and I will not be returning.
