Booked table before going to movies, unfortunately the experience was disappointing, possinlynew management? Rushed service, not sure why? Even though Friday night, the place wasn't flat out. Food was sub-par and portions smaller. My husband did not finish his (Stella) beer! Said beer tasted funny, think glass was not cooled, too warm in temperature. This place used to be good pub grub, go to place, we went to for years, but will not be going again, shame not a lot of options in Gizzy.

Very friendly staff. Surprisingly good and inventive food. Large portions and reasonably priced. A bit noisy, but that was because it was full.

My meal tonight was the Surf n Turf and it was absolutely amazing What i would really like to acknowledge, was the perfection of how my steak was cooked. I am very hard to please when it comes to how my steak is cooked Tonight The Chef was on point and in fact, the 2nd Chef out of hundreds of restaurants i have visited, to get it right I will be sure to revisit hopefully soon and share another amazing experience. Well done to all who contributed
FYI - Not sure if the garlic sauce was suppose to be watery or not (but it was still fill of flavour), if it is then ill know for next time to reduce amount Then this would be a banger of a dish with a 5 star rating Thank You

I ordered the chicken thai curry, for $24 I was very disappointed. The portion was very small, not very tasty or thai like and the chicken was very dry. Very little spinach and carrot some of which was cooked and some was raw. To be honest it looked like it had been thrown on the plate. I had to come home and cook my dinner.

On a positive note my daughters nachos were nice and my husband had the quiche which was good.

The young staff member we met was friendly and helpful.

A shame the chips were overcooked and a small amount.

More care could be taken with plating and portion sizes. Rivers is known for good portions but I think this definitely depends on what you order.

Awesome steak meal (surf n turf) steak had a garlic and prawns on top. Also had a fish meal. Beautifully fresh

Went for lunch with church members, including guests from Auckland, and the place was packed, but we had reservation, so, no problem here.
The table was clearly for 8 people but they overcrowded 10 people in it.
The drinks took almost half hour to be delivered and clearly they don't have kitchen able to attend the demand.
Entrée took almost one hour to be served From the moment of ordering to have the main plate served took one hour and a half and, to make it worst, they forgot the pastor's meal, which took other 20 minutes to deliver his plate. Very unfortunate.
If I were there to have lunch with my family instead, I would have given up and left after 30 minutes waiting after ordering.
To not ruin the entire experience, at least the food was good.

Very busy Friday night, so obviously popular and quite noisy - full of life. Very good reasonably priced pub food. Bar drink prices.

Super place, great menu good Guinness however I asked for a Jameson chaser and they said they were out of Jamesons boo hoo! (Esp when the bottle store is across the road)
All in all a damn good place to eat in Gissy.

Great place for a drink. Food was very disappointing tonight. Bland, grainy and glutinous chowder.

We has the Guinness pie meal and the Loaded wedges, both really good and great value. Nice Venue and friendly staff.

Wow food was the best, my partner had a T bone steak with mushrooms and chips and eggs (he didn't want any of the green stuff). Looked amazing and he loved it. I ordered the salmon steak, salad with potato bake. I enjoyed to the max. We loved the surrounds, the staff were great. We highly recommend this place *****

Very busy place. You might have to book it otherwise you won't find a table. It's cheaper than most pubs but food isn't great. Good enough though. Friendly staff and nice environment. Recommended!

A bit of a wait for our meals, but with a table of 9.to be expected. Gabe was our main server and he did a great job. He remembered our meals so there were no issues with who ordered what. Great friendly staff, always attentive and awesome food!

We stopped here for some cocktails and a beer. Along with some onion rings and the salt and pepper squid.

While the servers were good, they were a little slow at the outset and they weren’t that busy. However once they got started it got better.

If you want great pub food at an excellent price delivered with efficient, friendly staff.you’ve got to come here. Stayed 2 nights in Gisborne, ate dinner here both times. Great ambience and filled with items from yesteryear.

Had our family dine in around 5: 30! Ages from 3 to 50, ordered our meal only to get it an hour and a half later the young kids were very disappointed with their pizza, onion rings were cold. Older kids were not happy about the wait for dessert so we skipped dessert because of the long wait

Had the Pasta, timely and super friendly staff. Excellent value for money, dare I say under valued too, $20 main anywhere else paying 20-30% more. If in Gisborne and want a warm friendly place for a group I’d highly recommend and book in advance. Very popular spot
