The Works reviews
69I think the staff were too embarrassed to ask "how was the food? ". My reply would have been "underwhelming"
I booked lunch for 4, and the restaurant dropped my booking for a bigger reservation letting me know just at the night before. Very disappointed.
Usually an easy place to walk into for a good meal with pretty good selection.
Can pay to book later in the week.
Staff are friendly also which always helps!
Wonderfully friendly staff in the gorgeous old building looking over the water. The food was good - my sister really enjoyed her squid.
It is rare to find a place like this in a country where there's no proper cuisine, so good finding a proper restaurant and not just the usual fish n' chips, pizzas or other fast food. The beef tartare was great. I wish I had been able to try more plates cause they all looked good. Nice place and staff as well.
Well, I try restaurants to see if they improve and I can say happily the Works has changed a lot.
From 1 star to 5.
To be fair, the ownership/lease has changed, for the better.
We were taken to the rear for a quite dining experience, 35th wedding anniversary. Waiter was top notch, super person. Food was prompt and delicious. Left a tip at the table as gratitude. Highly recommend.
Very nice atmosphere. Great service and nice coffee (although could have been a bit hotter, and a bit bigger). Curly fries were very yummy
Awesome awesome awesome! Finally I found a place in Gisborne where I can sit back and enjoy awesome drinks accompanied by amazing hospitality and great food as well as drinks. There's no way for "no" here. I requested for chicken in my pasta and they did it! I haven't experienced a service like this before. Amazing coconut parafait it's a must try. Keep up the awesome work team The Works! Seriously must try. Thank you for the warm hospitality
Perfect dining. Pork.belly meal could do with 2 pieces meal abit small. Service very professional. Recommend going. Not often I say that.
Over rated; food was mosty bread ;salmon mixed with " bread ", small serving on top of large slice of BREAD,
like a bakery #.

We had a group of 11 people, we were asked to wait. The waiter continue to serve food and drinks to customers and attend to other customers at the counter. We had to wave few times to get his attention. And when we were finally getting attended, we were told they unable to take us in because we are a large group. (The restaurant is half empty) We offer we could sit in two separate tables. However, the waiter replied and said we should know it is busy during new year time and should have make a reservation.
1.the waiter could have told us straight away when he see we are a large group. So we don't have to wait for 10 minutes.
2. I totally understand it is busy time of the year. However, making comment like "We should know" is just rude and poor customer service.
We end up going to the "Crawford road kitchen" across the road, the food and the service is amazing.
Dinner last night, no fish available which was sad.
The risotto flavour was unusual, and I enjoy trying something new. My husband said his duck wasn't the best he has had.
Service is friendly
Stunning deserts.impressive service and a great atmosphere.we highly recommend this place.
We only stopped in for desert but wished we had had a main here too.
Upbeat atmosphere and friendly staff, food was a treat and left us wanting more especially dessert. Would gladly return if in town again
Just been in for dinner
No market fish available
So went to order small plate salmon but no salmon either
Ordered raw fish dish and beetroot parcel dish
So bad couldn't even eat either.
Service was fine although they didn't enquire why I didn't eat my order.
Horrendous
Very nice area and the service was good, but unfortunately the food was not worth the cost. Tiny portion and extremely bland, will not be going back.
Very average service, food portions were to small for the price, really strange, enjoyed it alot more years ago not sure what's changed, they need to be really alot more competitive, especially with the amount of competition that they have on the Wharf front.
Went there for lunch what a find had the LINGUINE MARINARA it was delightful the best meal I've had in a long time
Fantastic meal. Bit dark.they could do with some direct lighting. Great atmosphere and great food.
Wow what a lovely place to dine the waitresses were friendly and hospitable.
I had the funghi risotto which was divine.
My sister and my mother had the duck which was divine as well. Thank you all at The Works for a delightful evening
