Powderkeg Restaurant and Bar

Cozy restaurant with a fire and extensive beer selection. We had a lamb shank and pork ribs. Lamb shank was ok, nothing spectacular whilst the pork ribs were delicious with a lovely sticky sauce. Also tried the Pineapple Creme Brulé with a shot of tequila which was surprisingly tasty. Seemed busy and the place to be in Ohakune.

No reservations signs, first in first served. Stood around for over an hour before my group (12 people) could actually grab a table due to other customers being inconsiderate. Finally got our hands on a small table so we had to take turns with eating. Very busy place on weekends but good bar service and good food.

Just terrible for watching the rugby. Plenty of screens, but with terrible picture quality. They seemed confused that there even was a game on and had double booked a gig the same night.

Great atmosphere and great service from the girls last night. However, the food is very below average for what you pay. Not really an issue about the price as you can expect that in a tourist place but you would expect a satisfactory quality pub meal from this place which you won't get.

Got the ribs, probably worst in my life. Feels like it was cooked and with lots of fat everywhere. Wife got fish of the day, which was salmon from the bottom of the freezer. She actually liked it, but got just a big piece of salmon and no fries. If you want a good beer, this is the place. If you want good food, go somewhere else.

Had our last dinner here while on holiday in Ruapehu. Cute bar & restaurant. Food was good, wings were delicious with a little kick to them, fettuccine was different but still nice & the kids loved their burgers & fries. Another had the steak & gave it a. Meals were reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly too. Would definitely visit if ever in town again.

Tried to order a bottle of wine over the phone for a special occasion and was told ‘sorry too busy’. I’m literally trying to give you money over the phone?

Popped after day skying had bar meal and beer timely service and good food. Timber lodge feel has not dated in the bar area

Place was freezing and note other comments on here too. No heating in main restaurant at all and staff shrugged shoulders when asked!
Ordered potato caneloni which was very bland with an unappealing filling. Dressed with pumpkin seeds that were rancid.at least the waitress only charged for one meal but very disappointing all round as been impressed on previous occasions. The place just had the feeling of cutting back and trying to save money.

Stayed here for the night. Had burger with fries for dinner at the restaurant & eggs benny with bacon for breakfast with a flat white coffee

It's the first bar at the bottom of the mountain. I ordered a steak and when it arrived, I felt like I was eating that steak from "The Matrix". You know that scene where that dude is eating a steak and is aware that he is in the matrix but doesn't care.
The staff are stoked friendly people and the patrons are on the same vibe. It's the mountain, the town, it's Ohakune, and it's Powerkeg.

Were hoping for breakfast (not available after 11), ordered the Powderkeg grill, was advised they couldn't do scrambled eggs after 11 but they ended up accommodating. Food was alright but the menu says tomatoes, hash browns, mushrooms, but really you get a limp bit of each. Sorry to be a Karen but check your plurals, fam. Exhibit A attached. 3 stars, would buy coffee from again.

Just giving 4 stars because unfortunately they didn't have an item available! But apart from that, exceptional food for the price, and big servings. We ordered the pork ribs and the falafel burger.
Lots of people so it's hard to find a table during busy hours. Would definitely go again!

There's the only 1 place available for nice food & impressive place in that area. So good then

We arrived on a Saturday night at 7: 45pm and it was packed, they were out of pizzas and we all ordered burgers. The wait time was over an hour, when our food arrived my beef burger was very dry and all our fries were overcooked (the fries also tasted like the frozen ones you can get at the supermarket). It was very expensive for what you get as the burger was about $27! We liked that there was plenty of seating and overall good ambience to the place. The bar also turns into a nightclub after 10pm.

We had such a lovely waitress but unfortunately the food let the experience down. I expected the pork belly entry to have crackling but it was soft and unexpected, the adamame was very bland and under seasoned. The streak tasted great but was cold. The witness provided a free drink which was lovley of her to rectify it

Loves the food and atmosphere. Really great relaxing place to go to after a long day of skiing/snowboarding. Staff were kind and even though you could tell they were new the staff were well trained and didn't make mistakes

As per usual food was lovely and the service was great. But it was REALLY COLD in the restaurant. Guys if numerous tables have people wearing puffa jackets, beanies and scarves whilst eating you should do something about it. When we queried the temperature we were just told the heating wasn’t working well. Maybe lighting the fire or even giving out blankets would have helped. It doesn’t matter how good the food was, the atmosphere really let it down. Left very disappointed

Very polite and friendly service. Tasty and delicious meal of prawn pizza, lamb shank and sticky chicken wings to share between us, followed by dessert of creme brulee and date and chocolate tart with berry coulis. Mm so satisfying. We dined in comfort till midnight
