Beaks and Feathers reviews
27Amazing tour, we got to see 4 kiwis it was just amazing. Staff is knowledgeable and very respectful. It is really enjoyable that the tours are small it feels like you can really catch all the information and get to see and picture the birds without feeling stressed or hurried during the time you are there. The tour that is in the runway is really easy to follow, and I would highly recommend it to older people, kids, or people with mobility problems. Thank you!
You must!
Amazing kiwi viewing experience, really knowledgeable and kind guides, worth the high price.
On a clear and appropriate night, you might also see the Aurora as you spot kiwis.
A great way to access otherwise restricted areas with great kiwi viewing.
We had a terrific tour of Ulva Island. Our guides were fun and highly knowledgable about the island, birds, bird songs, fauna. They were even able to engage the teenager in our group. Highly recommend.
Great little shop full of high quality, genuine handmade, local goods, at reasonable prices.
Also offering tours of kiwi etc.
The service was amazing, thank you Emma. Definitely 5/5 stars, you must visit when on the island.
The guide was friendly and informative. A comfortable ride to the kiwi spotting location. We spotted three kiwis two of which came very close to us.
The most beautiful art / gift gallery. The lady that was there was so lovely - thank you for your help
Beaks & Feathers was recommended to us for the Kiwi Spotting Tour and they did not disappoint! The tour lasts about 1.5 hours and we learned so much about kiwi history and habitats. They are amazing creatures. Saw 2 different “chicks”, one approx 6 months old. After the tour, we were dropped off at our accommodation in town. Highly recommend if you are visiting Stewart Island!
Also happened to see the launch of several Starlink satellites…counted 57 but there were probably more…
We did the Ulva island by land and sea tour and it was amazing. Ange was so knowledgeable and passionate and was an excellent guide. We got to see so much wildlife and Ange's insight was so valuable.
Highly recommended! Excellent operator, very dedicated to kiwi survival with a very knowledgeable young guide. We saw 2 kiwis in one evening walk
We did the Kiwi spotting tour and the Ulva Island tour with Ange, and were blown away by both experiences. We saw 4 kiwis on the spotlighting tour, and so much more on the Ulva Island tour. Seeing the kiwis in the wild was a huge deal for us, and something that we'd wanted to do for a very long time, as was seeing the range of other threatened birds on Ulva Island (which we did see). Ange is a passionate, friendly, professional and highly knowledgeable host and guide, and as people who are botanically inclined, found her knowledge on the flora and fauna, pest animals, and general history of the Stewart Island region first class. There are other guide companies on Stewart Island, but from everything we experienced and heard from people we spoke to who had done tours with others, it would be a mistake if you didn't choose Beaks and Feathers. Thanks Ange.
Well organised. We booked to go Kiwi spotting along the airport runway. It was disappointing as we didn't spot one Kiwi, which was very rare. We were offered a free night the next day to compensate.
Ann and I did the kiwi spotting tonight only 2 of us and she still took us was most enjoyable and the host Angela was very knowledgeable and has a great respect for the kiwis on Stewart Island. They came close to us due to Angelas respect for them and us keeping quite. Definitely recommend!
Wow, I went kiwi spotting last night. The kiwi have been a bit shy lately. They don’t always come out to play or make an appearance to greet tourists. But last night they did. I was privileged to see kiwi, foraging food, strutting its stuff in the bush and crossing the airfield. Where else in the world would we see this. A great tour, informative and goes the extra mile. Very impressive.
What an incredible tour. Where else can you access an airfield at night to see 6 week old kiwi chicks going about their business in the wild? This is the best kiwi experience I have been on. We saw 5-6 kiwi out in the open as they fed. Their welfare was top of the guide's agenda which is always heartening. Ange was passionate and knowledgeable. A must do on Stewart Island.
An amazing tour on Ulva island with Ange. She was really knowledgeable, talking through the different birds, native plants and history of Rakiura. We saw all of the greats - kakariki, saddleback, Robin, pipipi, koremako and of course kerero and other NZ popular natives. Highly recommend!
Magical morning.got up at 4am to go kiwi spotting.being a dark night sanctuary, we saw stars, the milky way and a shooting star then we saw 2 male kiwis fighting over their territory, before seeing 6 more kiwis.burrowing their beaks in the soil for food and wriggling their bums finally dad came over & bundled up baby kiwi to take it to bed before the dawn light & the bird song started.
Our tour was with Ange, highly recommend!
Really magical experience with an informative and very thoughtful guide. We left it to the last evening on Stewart Island and almost skipped doing it; it seemed like a lot of money for a couple of hours with the family… but after spotting the first kiwi within a few minutes was totally hooked and absolutely no regret! The kids absolutely loved it too. Will be the first thing I do next time we’re lucky enough to be down that way!
Ange sorted our booking out on a last minute basis as our booking from another company got cancelled. Very responsive as well.
Our guide Mel had also provided us with a pleasant experience during the kiwi spotting as well:)
The lady guide is aware of the location of kiwi birds. They will take us to a private land (locked for other viewers).
On our kiwi spotting experience with the lovely Mel, I believe her name was from beaks and feathers. We were so lucky to spot 5 kiwi (even a wee bubba one) & a deer! Mel was incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic which made our time that much more exciting. Definitely recommend!
