Nikau Cave & Cafe reviews
715star’s for location, food options limited. But the ride there is Beautiful and cafe location is awesome.
O you should go there. Reward at the end of a lively drive.
The setting in the middle of Te Akau is perfect. The pizza and staff were very good, as was the weather.
Locals asked us out for lunch. Thanks Cliff and Leonie.
Perhaps next time we go to the Nikau caves
Great people always happy to see you and look after you never mind how big the numbers are I go there often
Most surprising country cafe I have visited. Outstanding pizzas and beers. Thanks to my daughter Belinda and Tom for taking me there
Loved our cave tour - amazing what is in your back yard and yet we were unaware of it! Once back at the cafe we indulged in some of their fabulous pizza. Seriously good food:) Definitely worth the picturesque drive out there!
Amazing! Get a real taste of kiwi with hosts Anne and Philip who have fantasic stories about their world of sheep shearing as the serve up great food, AMAZING coffee and take you on a tour of their caves filled with glow worms and fascinating formations. Even stay the night and have a real getaway
as they have accommodation too! Absolutely recommend!
Outstanding! Philip is a incredible guide with such personality and great stories. Not to mention also a great barista who will serve you a coffee after a cave tour.
The caves are still as untouched and preserved as ever! So it’s a true authentic non-touristy experience. It feels like being a kid exploring the wilderness.
While we didn't do the cave exploration, the meal we had was excellent and the hosts were awesome. We are going back to do the caves next time.
Very friendly staff, professional guide for cave. The cafe food is very tasty, they roast their coffee bean, the back ground scenery is pretty good too. Was amazing experience, thank you
Nice quiet location, good motorcycle ride.
Cafe good but not a big menu.
Didn't explore caves but heard it's good.
Will go again.
Beautiful place to visit, Stunning underground visuals on our tour, worth adding to your todo list! Rustic Cafe attached has great home baking.
Great experience! The hosts are super friendly and interesting people. Anne is an excellent cook and Phil knows so much about the caves. Clean, comfortable, affordable accommodation. The cave tour takes around 2 hours and includes enormous caverns filled with pristine white stalactites and stalagmites and lots of glow worms. One section where you need to crawl, but generally accessible to anyone of modest mobility.
Loved this place. Casual, rustic atmosphere in a lovely setting. I stayed 3 nights in my campervan, did the caving trip with Phillip & Anne (which was awesome), the waterfall walk, hiked all over the farm, plus collected mushrooms & blackberries. This is a true kiwi experience. Reasonable level of fitness, suppleness & balance required for caving but would be suitable for most people. Highly recommended.
This was a day of adventure travelling from Port Waikato to Nikau Cafe. What a beautiful drive & a delightful place to be. The café is spacious & has a comfortable area for children & adults to relax with books to read & toys for children.
The coffee & food available was 4 star.
A real hidden treasure.
Had lunch and the cave trip. Cafe eatery was very casual and feels rough home style in a professional way. They have it well done. Breads and many vegetables were home made/grown. Plenty of outdoor seating with a stream below and farmland all around with plenty of trees. With a group with a variety of food ordered and nobody complained. Can buy alcohol.
Cave trip was just five including our guide. Not too cold but you get wet feet as walking in the stream. Did get wet pants when had to crawl on hands and knees in a section but nearly dry by the time we got back to the cafe. The experience feels like you are just on a farmer's rough cave walk but it is professional and well done. T shirt shorts and sandals would be ok for the cave.
Recommended by me.
Great place to visit. You will get wet when you go through the cave, because it is a real adventure, so bring spare clothes. The guide was a really friendly down to earth Kiwi guy.
Awesome cave tour. Just be aware, this is not a stroll on a boardwalk that happens to pass through a cave, this is a 1 km clamber through natural formations, including a bit of crawling on hands and knees (or dragging yourself on your tummy) through an underground stream. Do not wear clothes that you mind getting torn; do not wear things that you mind getting wet and muddy. And it's totally worth it.
Philip is a legend. Wonderful experience thank you so much! Delicious pizza, tea, coffee and beer too! Lovely building. Beautiful area. Perfect caving experience. I hope it gets fully booked as they deserve it.
This is an amazing experience. Did the caving expedition with our 8 year old boy and he loved it. Quote "This place is extraordinary! ".
Amazing hidden gem. Loved the cave experience and delish cafe food to warm up afterwards. Awesome day trip from Auckland.
