Big Thumb Chinese Restaurant reviews
54 After enjoying yum cha in many of wellington's restaurants over the last 20 years I can quite honestly say that today's yum cha at big thumb was the absolute best I have ever had! The flavours were amazing, the food was beautifully cooked and the service was very attentive.
Highly highly recommended.
Maybe the decor is looking a bit tired but that is the least your concerns when you are enjoying food that is this good
$35 set menu (A) for 6 or more people was fantastic. So yummy. Slight muck up on billing, but ended up okay.
Few of the Chinese restaurants that did an awesome job at Chinese food. It is awesome. Recommend the fired rice.
It was very busy today so I can excuse some of the bad service but it was ridiculous. They obviously allowed the restaurant to be overbooked and they were unprepared for the crowds. We waited 20 minutes for a table even though we had booked. We had to wait another 10 minutes before plates and chopsticks arrived.
Your yum cha experience is very reliant on your table location. The big tables are close to the kitchen and tend to get the lion's share of the food coming out. If you are close to the window, good luck. We waited an hour before we got any dumplings, only tripe and chicken feet would make it's way through the restaurant to us. The table next to us were told to drink out of bowls as they couldn't clean the cups for them. We were charged insane prices for the second choice dishes, totalling $33 per person. Never again, save your money and go to any other yum cha place
We have been here many times and everytime the food and service is amazing. Hands down the best chinese we have ever had
Below average and cheap tasting Chinese food without being actually THAT cheap, huge portions though. Obviously a case of "quantity over quality"
We enjoyed the food, it was great, the service by the staff was amazing, very accommodating to our requirements for the evening.
My first ever Yum Cha and so so so loved it. Just like having all the best entree selections without having to eat ALL of them. Great selection of dishes, even chicken feet!
So sad: Special occasion and I wanted the Peking duck. Click on the menu, see home delivery is highlighted, so pay the $50 and add a 6: 20/30 delivery time. Open the wine about 6, we are all salivating ; 6: 15 get a call from delivery people, gone to pick up and find the place closed! (Tues). I'm devastated, why didn't they update this info when I placed the order around mid-day?
The chicken was reheated. Not too nice at all. Overall very dissappointed, it was a tuesday evening so it may have had a baring on it. Have been there before and was really good. Probally wont rush back
I had yumcha with friends on Sunday and everything was brilliant. Steamed dim sum, prawn and chives etc too many to name all beautifully made and all super fresh and so good. Roast pork faultless.ate so much I didnt need dinner!
It's a byo so you are probably not going for the food, if you are going for the food, there are better options nearby
In fact, there are better options for food at byos around, but not many of them can offer low corkage and big tables
Overall the food was good but we orderd some food and we didnt get. One of my friends was angry because he didnt get some chicken feet.
Such beautiful food and great customer service. If you are looking to get good quality Chinese food, come here. It’s not overly flash but it has a great vibe and hospitable staff. Would recommend to anyone
Must have a new chef as yum cha selection has expanded in a good way. We go every Sunday and have done for almost 10 years as parking is plentiful and food has always be good. Not great but you are not rushed and to tossed out exactly in 60 minutes like the other Chinese restaurants in the area on a Sunday.
I mean the food tasted great and the younger girls working there were lovely but the old lady was stroppy as anything. We asked to move as the table hadn't been set-up right so we were all sat with table legs in the middle of our seats and they couldn't move us. Quite rowdy but then is it BYO!
Food is just alright. But what astonished us is that they require you to order over $20 worth of food each, excluding corkage fee when BYO. No previous notice at all while booking. I’m just saying, there are many other better BYO restaurants at Wellington. None of them runs like this.
This place is very awesome with lots of yummy food. Very very delicious. You guys must be try This one (very recommend) ; Lemon Chicken, Big Thumb Pork Cutlets, Orange Beef.
Came to wellington from Rarotonga for a holiday and wanted to treat myself to some warm homely Vietnamese dishes. I was stunned that the meals were up to standard I would give 4 stars but unfortunately I’m not sure if it was because of our timing we were the only ones in the restaurant but our meals came out extremely late poor
Best place in wellington if you are a fan of yum cha highly recommend deep fried shrimp and pork n chive dumplings all are pretty good though. The chilli dip is amazing but its not cheap i dont thing. A friend and i can go through 50 bucks for lunch so it adds up even though the dishes are 4 to 5 bucks each. Love the bok choy in oyster sauce
Pretty good service too
