Federal Delicatessen reviews
89Perfect spot for a date night with a little poutine and the delicious range of desserts, loved the banoffee pie
Visited Federal Delicatessan recently because of the good reviews but it was very crowded and everything seemed quite rushed. The food was okay but the waiters walking past kept bumping into our table which made me quite uncomfortable. Seemed very chaotic.
Great food, service and vibe. What let down the overall experience was the lack of coffee. I get the whole NYC theme but unless you like filter coffee, you're going without!
Great food and service, staff are super friendly and always keep your coffee topped up. Cool booths and counter seating. Sandwich was great last time so I came back and had the veal this time, perfect.
We went to Federal Deli on a week day at lunch time and it was so busy! Which goes to show how popular this place is. Their banaoffee pie slice is the BEST I've had hands down
Loved the food, great service. A getaway to New York without leaving the city. Cute diner uniforms too
Would be nice if the chef cut the fat off of the meat in the Reuben sandwich. Isn't pleasant when you get a mouth full of fat with each bite. I've eaten here in the past and the meat didn't have the fat on it so don't know if it's a new chef who can't be bothered or that's just how they serve it now.
A great taste of Americana.
Had a Rueben sandwich, chicken sandwich, matzo ball soup and Poutine. All of these dishes were better than I had hoped and the price was good as well.
Wild love to visit again.
Amazing food every time I come. Drinks not as amazing but still alright and made up for by food. Recommended!
You know when you're hungry and there's just this something that you just need? Chicken salad sandwich, that's what you need. Come here, get it.
This is a very cosy diner. Relaxed, welcoming and real. True Al Brown style.
I reckon the most pleasant part of the menu is what they offer for lunch. The Kahawai is the best dish.
Although channeling New York Jewish delis this ain't kosher. More like a Cafe imagined in Te Awamutu in 1972 that has a knowledgeable and maverick cook inspired by local ingredients.
Brilliant realization of nostalgia NZ. Fleur Sullivan could well approve of this home style deli.
Nice place and with a old school American diner feel. Was a bit concerned around only serving filtered coffee so I got the hot chocolate which wasn't hot but was really nice. The potatoes and pastrami hash was really good. Nice place. I'd go back.
Really good desserts! Been here multiple times just for the NY cheesecake! There is a thing called a 3 way which is three cakes for $20! So good for sharing!
The ambience of Federal is good but it’s where I’ve had the worst poutine ever. The fries were burnt and tasteless, the gravy was too salty and there was barely any cheese on top. I suggest you stop serving this dish! It ruined my experience.
Everything was so good! But I just give 4 stars coz I asked staff to move my seat and she told me to wait for few minutes. Probably she forgot so I asked another staff then he forgot again. I asked three times but I couldn't move my seats.
This place really is that good. It’s just so simple in its excellence - great food, served quickly by friendly staff in a warm and welcoming diner environment. One of our favourite Auckland hang outs!
Chowder
Cloudy bay clams
Great experience, great restaurant. Staff super friendly and price is reasonable! (Better than depot next door)
Cute waitresses in blue! Lol. I ordered the turkey meatloaf and I’m an Oklahoma girl so I’m not one to choose Turkey over BEEF but oh my goodness. DELISH.
Love the atmosphere. Been a favorite since my husband and I started dating and still go there when we get the chance. Salmon Latkes is a favourite dish with amazing c bottomless coffee.
Such a cool and unique addition to the CBD. I feel this place is exactly what the rest of the city lacks in terms of the interior vibes. But the main reason we enjoyed it so much was the perfectly cooked NY Strip Steak and Montreal Poutine which was equally delicious and moreish. I’ve been to New York City, and honestly this “diner” styled restaurant is like a 5 star restaurant compared to a real American diner. Definitely worth a visit even if you might have to wait for a table.
